TV series The Great which dubiously depicted the life of Catherine The Great from 1762 to 1796, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, has been cancelled after three seasons.
The award winning historical comedy followed a young Catherine The Great from her marriage through to when she attempts to lead Russia into a new era, having usurped the throne from her husband Peter who she often plots to kill and he attempts likewise.
Most of the story is set at the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, where the court of Russian nobles and advisors to Catherine gather. The third season was released in May.
The back drop and costumes alone have caught the eyes of various Hollywood prize giving bodies, it has been nominated and won Emmys, SAGs, A Critics Choice and two Golden Globe nominations.
The series did not end on a cliff hanger, in fact it just ended with Catherine as a ruler and a new hair cut.
Speaking to Vanity Fair about his time on the show, Nicholas Hoult who played Peter said: I've never experienced anything quite like it, I’ve never enjoyed playing a character as much and experienced and grown so much in my personal life outside of it. I don’t think I’ll ever experience anything like it again."
