Ammonite, 10.00pm, BBC Two
Highly regarded historical biopic, starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, who are both in top form here.
In the 1840s, renowned but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning lives a near-solitary existence with her mother in Lyme Regis.
One day, amateur palaeontologist Roderick Murchison arrives in her shop with his invalid wife, asking to be allowed to learn her hunting techniques.
When he departs on an expedition, he leaves Charlotte in Lyme, and asks Mary to keep an eye on his infirm wife.
Cape Fear, 11.30pm, BBC One
Martin Scorsese's remake of the 1962 noir thriller, starring Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis dangles danger delightfully.
There’s also a nice touch with cameo appearances by Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Martin Balsam, who all appeared in the original.
The story’s far from nice though, as DeNiro plays a psychopathic rapist who is released from prison after 14 years and plots revenge on the attorney he blames for his imprisonment.
Subjecting the lawyer and his family to a terrifying campaign of intimidation, he uses his knowledge of the law to stay untouchable.
