Pick of the Day
Everly Brothers Night, BBC Two
One of the greatest vocal pairings in pop history, the Everly Brothers enjoyed massive success across several decades.
A night of programming dedicated to their unique sound begins at 9pm with The Everly Brothers: Songs of Innocence and Experience.
It’s a classic documentary from 1984 where Don and Phil Everly returned to the coal-mining area of Kentucky where their father Ike played guitar alongside his brothers in the 1930s.
In the moody atmosphere of Muhlenberg County, the stars have an emotional reunion with three generations of the Everly clan.
With contributions by master musician and producer Chet Atkins, songwriters Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, and the legendary Mose Rager.
That’s followed at 10.35pm by The Everly Brothers Reunion Concert.
The duo reformed to perform in the autumn of 1983 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, which they chose because they had treasured memories of playing there with their father, Ike.
The brothers' reconnection and subsequent live performance after 10 bitter years apart was such a high-profile event that the filming was fed live into the BBC Nine o'clock News.
Arena's cameras proved that they and their unique sound could still capture the public's imagination.
After some golf, the boys are back at 12.55am with The Everly Brothers: Harmonies from Heaven.
Don and Phil - arguably the greatest harmony singers of all time - began as childhood musicians, performing as Little Donnie and Baby Boy Phil on their father's radio shows in Iowa.
This documentary follows Don back to the place where their love for music was formed to recall the music that was omnipresent in their home, the influence of their parents, the early radio shows and the musicians they played with in their formative years.
Contributors include Art Garfunkel, Graham Nash, Dave Edmunds and Tim Rice.
