Connor McCann
Connor McCann

Belfast singer Connor McCann has released his new single, I Believe. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

The former frontman of now defunct Norther Irish alt-rock trio Stonemasons, Connor is releasing two solo EPs this year, which will later make up his debut album, Without Wax.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I'm a singer songwriter from Belfast (Glenravel, originally). I have 2 EPs forming an album being released this year. I toured Russia and Ukraine during war time.

How would you describe your music?

Folk music with lots of alt rock sensibilities. It’s a lot more stripped back and genuine than music. I am used to making, with a couple of heavy songs that snuck through the net.

Who are your musical inspirations?

My background is in Grunge music, but more recently it would be Big Thief, Hozier, and Bon Iver.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

I feel like most people are 'guilty’ of seeing boy bands etc and cringing at having the time of their lives, but the first gig I went to was when my sister brought me to Ocean Colour Scene opening for Oasis - strong start.

What was the first record you ever bought?

The first one I ever bought myself was probably Americana by The Offspring, no shame still totally holds up and reminds me of oversized jeans and necklaces with skulls on them. And led me to a lot of great bands but probably the first music that made me want to play guitar although playing that music seemed impossible. I bought it from an entrepreneur on my school bus who was burning CDs and selling them so John if you’re reading this... cheers.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Get the Old Band Back Together Again by Christian Lee Hutson - don’t look it up unless you’re prepared to sing it all day long.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"Old friends, old mothers, dogs, and brothers. There’s only so much letting go you can ask someone to do" - Adrianne Elizabeth Lenker (Big Thief).

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Difficult, as I’d need to be prepared to hate it eventually, but something that would come back around again - Vincent by Don McLean.

Where can people find your music/more information?

My music will be available on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify and everywhere you download music.
