Sunday Cinema
Cleopatra, 11.00pm, BBC Two
An early start for the movie that brought Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor together and made a small fortune for restaurants and nightspots around Rome’s Via Veneto.
The historical epic also stars Martin Landau, Rex Harrison, Hume Cronyn and George Cole.
You probably know the score here. Taylor plays the famous Queen, who sets out to consolidate her power after gaining control of the Egyptian kingdom.
She seduces Julius Caesar and bears him a son, but the ambitious would-be tyrant is assassinated before she can take her place at his side.
That paves the way for her love affair with general Mark Antony - Burton, of course - and a war for control of the Roman empire.
Braveheart, 10.30pm, BBC One
Oscar-winning 1995 historical epic, directed by and starring Mel Gibson. With Patrick McGoohan, Sophie Marceau and Catherine McCormack.
It’s an account of the life of medieval Scottish hero William Wallace, played here with much gusto by Gibson.
After the slaughter of his father and brother, young Wallace is taken in by his uncle, who teaches him how to use not only his brawn but his brain - which he employs to great effect years later when he resolves to drive the English out of Scotland.
