A representative for model and TV presenter Gigi Hadid has confirmed that Hadid was arrested for possession of cannabis while holidaying in the Cayman Islands, but says that the drugs were purchased legally "for medical use".

In a statement shared with the PA news agency, Hadid's representative said: "Gigi was travelling with marijuana purchased legally in NYC (New York City) with a medical licence.

"It has also been legal for medical use in Grand Cayman since 2017. Her record remains clear and she enjoyed the rest of her time on the island."

E! News had previously reported that Hadid and a friend were arrested at the airport upon landing at the Owen Roberts International Airport, after customs officials found cannabis in their bags. They were taken to a detention centre before being released on bail.

E! claimed that a local news outlet revealed that the model and her friend appeared in court on 12 July, where they were formally charged and pleaded guilty. They were both fined $1,000, and no conviction was recorded.

The 28-year-old model, who co-hosts Netflix competition show Next In Fashion, shared pictures on her Instagram on Tuesday of her holiday which showed her on the beach with friends.

She also wrote: "All's well that ends well" but did not address the arrest directly.

Hadid posted a series of photos on her Instagram on Tuesday, with the caption, "All's well that ends well."

The photos drew many comments from several of her 78 million Instagram followers, querying whether or not she had been arrested.

Hadid began her modelling career aged two after being discovered by Guess co-founder, the Moroccan-born fashion designer Paul Marciano.

She has gone on to work with brands including Versace, Chanel, Fendi and Marc Jacobs and made more than 30 cover appearances for various international editions of Vogue.

Hadid was romantically involved with former One Direction member Zayn Malik and the pair share a two-year-old daughter.
