Doctor Strange and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch was moved to tears on the latest episode of National Geographic's Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge.
The 46-year-old actor became emotional as he experienced an "extraordinary" connection to his grandfather.
Presenter Grylls, who is a former Special Forces soldier, had arranged for the British Royal Navy to send a nuclear submarine to meet the pair off the coast for an extraction, which is the peak moment of each episode of the series.

This held special significance for Cumberbatch, as his grandfather was a World War II submariner, with one of his most high-profile missions being an extraction aboard a British Royal Navy nuclear submarine that surfaced off Scotland's Isle of Skye.
As the submarine surfaced, Cumberbatch got emotional and had to wipe tears from his eyes.

He revealed, "I feel interestingly connected to my grandfather and it's very moving. I'm tearing up now.
"My grandfather has been playing in my mind over the last couple of days and I felt a very immediate connection to him. And to see the submarine was very much an: 'Oh my God' shock moment.
"'It was amazing. I was so moved. The last couple of days have been extraordinary - what an experience."
Henry Carlton Cumberbatch, the actor's paternal grandfather, died in 1966, ten years before the actor was born.
Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge sees celebrity guests tested both physically and mentally beyond their limits as Bear teaches them a key set of survival skills. Bradley Cooper and Russell Brand also take part in the current series.
