Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy has indicated that he no longer wishes to accept roles where his character smokes, due to health concerns.

The Cork actor was speaking in reference to two of his most famous roles - gang boss Thomas Shelby in BBC drama Peaky Blinders and his upcoming turn as American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the film Oppenheimer.

As Shelby and Oppenheimer smoked heavily, Murphy smoked herbal cigarettes while portraying both characters.

In an interview with The Guardian, Murphy said: "I've smoked so many fake cigarettes for Peaky and this [Oppenheimer].

"My next character will not be a smoker. They can't be good for you.

"Even herbal cigarettes have health warnings now."

It has been previously reported that Murphy smoked over 3,000 herbal cigarettes in his nine years on Peaky Blinders.

Oppenheimer tells the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb, and will released here on 21 July. Emily Blunts stars alongside Murphy as the lead character's wife.

Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Matt Damon, Robert Downey, Jr. & Florence Pugh also star in this Christopher Nolan-directed movie.
