Barbie writer-director Greta Gerwig has lamented that scheduling conflicts dashed hopes of having her Lady Bird and Little Women stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet film cameos for the much-anticipated new movie.

In an interview with the website CinemaBlend about bringing the iconic doll Barbie to the big screen in an acclaimed adventure, Gerwig explained that other films put paid to her cameo plans.

"Well, it was always going to have to be a sort of smaller thing because [Saoirse] was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for. And of course, it's brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo," she said.

"I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy, and both of them couldn't do it and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much," Gerwig continued.

Ronan's first film as both star and producer, the addiction recovery drama The Outrun, and Chalamet's work on the Willy Wonka film Wonka and the sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two stood in the way of Gerwig's plans.

The Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-starring Barbie is released in cinemas on Friday 21 July.
