Behind the music - Colin O'Shea

Colin O'Shea
Colin O'Shea

Dublin-based singer-songwriter has released my second studio album, Bright Yellow Shiny Gold. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

Recorded over a three years and produced by the talented David Prendergast (Overheard the Albatross, Kodaline), the album fuses elements of pop, rock and electronic, with O'Shea delving into themes of love, loss, and redemption.

O'Shea will be hosting an intimate album launch event on 12 July at the Vintage Room at The Workman's Club in Dublin.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I moved to Spain, a place called Zaragoza when I was 18 years old. I rented a three-bedroom apartment for €200 a month, worked as an English teacher and continued my piano and song writing development on a keyboard I had bought locally. I spent two years there and it was one of my greatest life experiences. I love to cook (mainly Spanish cuisine) coupled with a good bottle of Ribera del Duero. I'm intrigued by the mind, human behaviour, and personalities. It led me to complete a degree in psychology and study astrology.

How would you describe your music?

It's a mixed bag I think influenced by many different genres I jump between such as pop, rock, soul, electronic and classical.

Sam Cooke, George Michael, John and Paul, Elton John, John Fogerty, Johnny Cash.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Oasis at The Point in 1997.

What was the first record you ever bought?

A Genesis live album - The Way We Walk.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I listened to an interview with Christine McVie. One before she sadly passed, and it was about her song writing. It's had me playing through the Fleetwood Mac Rumours album quite a bit. If I was to choose one song on the album right now, probably Go Your Own Way.

Favourite lyric of all time?

I've always loved this U2 lyric: "Have you come here for forgiveness? Have you come to raise the dead? Have you come here to play Jesus? To the lepers in your head".

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Twisting the Night Away by Sam Cooke.

Where can people find your music/more information?

All the usual places; Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Soundcloud, etc and my website.
