Madonna has postponed her 40th anniversary The Celebration tour after developing a serious bacterial infection, which led to her being treated in an intensive care unit.

Her long-time manager, Guy Oseary, posted on his Instagram on Wednesday that: "On Saturday, June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several-day stay in the ICU.

"Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected."

Guy Oseary, Madonna's manager, alerted fans to the singer's recent illness via an Instagram post

"At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.

"We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows."

The pop icon announced the worldwide tour at the beginning of year, and was set to do over 40 dates across North America and Canada, starting in mid-July, before moving to Europe in October to play cities including Paris, Lisbon and Berlin.

She is due to perform four nights in London's o2 Arena in October. There will not be an Irish gig as part of this tour.

The tour aims to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her breakout single, Holiday, with the setlist featuring all her greatest hits.
