Aisling Bea shines at Take That film premiere

Irish actress, writer and comedian Aisling Bea took centre stage at the world premiere of Greatest Days on Thursday night.

Greatest Days is the film adaptation of the official and hugely successful Take That jukebox musical of the same name, which was originally called The Band.

39-year old Bea stars as Irish nurse Rachel, who is a Take That superfan, lives in London and works for the NHS.

It is Bea's first lead role in a major movie, and the This Way Up star also sings in the film.

The feel-good film, featuring many of Take That's hit songs, follows five best friends who have the night of their lives seeing their favourite boy band in concert.

25 years later they are reunited and travel to Greece, to see an epic show by the childhood heroes and rekindle their friendships.

Bea said the film was a "love letter" to her character, who is "passionate" about her job and feels the need to revive the "connection with her friends".

Of the enduring popularity of Take That, Bea said, "Everyone in Britain and Ireland knows every single word - without knowing how or why - of their songs - a 30 year career of being able to say that is intensely amazing."

She told reporters that the first CD she ever bought was Innocent Child, a single by Take That star Mark Owen.

Also attending the premiere was Irish actress Lara McDonnell, who plays the teenage version of Aisling Bea's character Rachel in the film.

19-year old McDonnell, who also featured in Kenneth Branagh's Belfast, said it was a "complete and utter honour" and "a dream come true" to star in the movie.

"I was very much after their [Take That's] time. For me, we watched the [Take That] documentary, 30 years in the Making, with my mum who is a massive Take That fan, and I think the fact that I get to be a part of something she grew up with, and I get to be associated with them at all is just... a complete and utter honour and a dream come true."

The current members of Take That - Howard Donald, Gary Barlow and Mark Owen - performed some of their hits at the premiere.

Donald told reporters that the event was, "Obviously amazing.

"Music in general – not just Take That’s music – touches people’s hearts, creates friendships, gets people through difficult times, brings people together.

"The power of music is so, so powerful."
