London-based, Irish band Nixer have released their new single, Second Hand, from their upcoming EP I Hit The Town And The Town Hit Me Back, which will be released in Autumn. We asked frontman and songwriter Seán Keenan the BIG questions . . .
The new song follows previous releases of Pleasure and Irish Dancer and the song "focuses on themes of fraught connection and festering distrust as life unravels around the writer".
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I have a degree in Mathematics. I love exercising and it's a huge part of my creative process. My favourite colour is yellow.
How would you describe your music?
I was gonna start by saying I'd describe Nixer as fast but then thought naaaah and thought of three Es to describe it... electronic, energetic, evolving. Nixer is very conceptual especially when it comes to ideas and inspirations that are the catalyst for the music we write. I'm really excited to show and explore this with future records we'll write.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Musically I'm inspired by anything that piques my interest and inspires me lyrically or anything that sonically that makes me wanna move my body and go crazy. A musical inspiration that does both for me is Boy Harsher. Other inspirations would be Alex G, King Krule, and a diverse range of music.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
This is a bit of a flex but the first gig I ever went to was Arctic Monkeys at Malahide Castle in 2007. Crazy! Still my fondest gig memory and I'm so grateful to my dad for bringing me as a very, very young fella.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Pinty - City Limits. This is the first record I ever owned; I didn't buy it. So, I started collecting records in 2019. I was working in finance at the time and investing in turntables and a proper setup was, in hindsight, a parting gift to myself from the finance world and my career. Pinty's record was actually gifted to me by my best mate Nico, who visited me in London after I just moved to the city. It also inspired me to buy decks and start collecting records. It's a bit crazy because I've been making music with Pinty recently and I'm working for Bradley (Rhythm Section label head) who put the record out. Very full circle.
What's your favourite song right now?
HighSchool - Colt. A fresh from the press release by my favourite up and coming artist HighSchool. They're an amazing band and amazing people from Melbourne. I love this new track by them.
Favourite lyric of all time?
Alex G - Message. "Every year I'm getting older, but every day I feel the same". It's not the most profound lyric ever but the simplicity of it just cuts through me every time. I've also listened to and shared this song on my birthday every year for as long as I can remember, it really sticks with me.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Jamie T - Alicia Quays.
