That Old Quiet Lighthouse

That Old Quiet Lighthouse have released their debut album, Learning To Live With Less. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

That Old Quiet Lighthouse are Ashley Garrod, Gabe Alexander, James Cooke, and Pip Rousiamanis and they say they are committed to putting the "emo back in wholesome" (it sez here).

Speaking about the album, Ashley says, "It's a break-up record, fuelled by the isolation and despair the first lockdown caused. But its focus is more on framing memories in a positive light and coming to terms with the emptiness moving on can have initially.

"Song meanings for me usually come after the song is written; I don’t usually have a conscious thing I wish to express; I just write what feels natural and its meaning becomes apparent after the fact. It’s an album of grief, but also an album of love and appreciation for life - bittersweet as it is."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I’m lead singer/bassist of That Old Quiet Lighthouse! I was born in Somerset, my favourite ice-cream flavour is honeycomb and I cannot roll my Rs, no matter how hard I try.

How would you describe your music?

Nostalgic, bittersweet, eclectic! Indie-emo-folk, occasionally infused with orchestral essence.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Pinegrove and their emotive and quirky lyricism, Big Thief and their passionate instrumentation, Blur’s diverse sound-worlds and They Might Be Giants’ tongue-in-cheek musical demeanour.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first one I can remember is seeing Arctic Monkeys on their AM tour in Cardiff.

What was the first record you ever bought?

The first record I ever went bought was Arc by Everything Everything.

What’s your favourite song right now?

My favourite song right now is probably Doctor Worm by They Might Be Giants!

Favourite lyric of all time?

I would go with Pinegrove’s 'I should call my parents when I think of them. should tell my friends when I love them’ from Old Friends. It’s a beautifully honest reflection on how we get too lost in the big picture, and don’t focus on showing appreciation for the simplest things - particularly in the context of the song.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Hard question! I would go with Come On! Feel The Illinoise! Sufjan Stevens. So uplifting!

Where can people find your music/more information?
