Russell Crowe has reminisced about playing "a bit of tennis" and having "the odd drink or two" in a video post thanking his "mate" Ryan Tubridy as he steps down as the host of the Late Late Show.

Tubridy presented his final edition of the show last Friday and his guests included President of Ireland Michael D Higgins and the kids from many of the Toy Shows he had presented.

There were also video messages from Bono and The Edge, who gifted the host a new Vespa to the presenter, Paul McCartney, and Saoirse Ronan.

Crowe, who starred most recently in The Pope's Exorcist, was a regular guest on the Late Late - he once memorably chided the audience for their clapping skills - and better late than never, the actor posted a good luck video to Tubridy this morning.

He sent his clip from the Gershwin Room Melbourne's Espy venue, after he had played a gig there with his band last Thursday night.

"Every single time I've come on your show, I love the vibe, and I love what you've done and I'm really proud of what you've achieved in 15 years," he said.

"Because now we're mates, and I can say things like that to you.

"We've played a bit of tennis, had the odd drink or two, and here's a little special message from the people of Melbourne to you, Ryan."

Crowe's video clip features the audience shouting 'Good luck Ryan!' before he performs the song Blackjack County Chains, which he also played on the Late Late Show last year.
