Sligo band Some Remain have released their new single, Knuckle Sandwich. We asked Jamie from the band the BIG questions . . .
Speaking about the song, they say, "A heavier, shorter song than our previous releases, Knuckle Sandwich is as close to its namesake as any song we've written.
"The opening riff repeats throughout with pounding drums and dirty bass. Another song we've had for a long time, it's one that always resonates at live performances, especially Jamie's borderline screamed 'with such an impressive mind' on the chorus.
"At around two mins, it's also the shortest song we've written to date."
Some Remain are made up of Jamie (vocals), Colm (guitar), Leo (bass), Matthew (drums) and their previous singles are debut Television, Walk Away and Never Enough.
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
When I was five, I asked my parents to call me Bart after Bart Simpson himself, It lasted briefly. I'm a big Liverpool fan. I'm allergic to peanuts
How would you describe your music?
Very high energy, fun, aggressive and definitely should be heard primarily in the club.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Damon Albarn's music has always been a big part of my musical taste and inspiration, especially since Blur are one of the first bands I really started listening to. Other artists like The Fall, The Beatles, Lou Reed, early Arctic Monkeys, Pixies and The Streets all come to mind. Some newer acts that I really like are Shame, Idles, Little Simz and Fontaines D.C., who are especially a big part of the inspiration to start a band in the first place. And you can’t go wrong with a bit of Lizzo every once and a while too I suppose.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
I guess the first ever concert I went to was Rolling Stones in Croke Park. It was a good laugh, but I'd say the first proper small gig I saw was Fontaines in the Róisín Dubh back in 2018, before they became really big. I went with our guitarist, Colm, and we didn't expect it to be as exciting and as high energy as it turned out to be. Definitely got a real buzz seeing them do their thing in an intimate venue, and watching an Irish band play that kind of music definitely gave us incentive to start our own band.
What was the first record you ever bought?
I can't remember if I bought it or if it was a present, but Mylo Xyloyto by Coldplay was the first album I remember owning. That's not a very cool answer, but Demon Days by Gorillaz is the first CD I remember buying. That Coldplay album has some good tunes, though.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Language Barrier by English Garden is a tune I've been playing a lot.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Flushin MCs down the loo, If you don't believe me bring your posse, bring your crew." from Fix Up, Look Sharp by Dizzee Rascal. It's a pretty great lyric, it goes hard. Another song with lyrics that I like is Boots of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan, there's some really beautiful lyrics in there.
Where can people find your music/more information?
Our music can be found on all the normal streaming services, Spotify, YouTube etc. We’re quite active on Instagram and some other platforms, just search up our name and you'll find us if you want to keep up to date with what we're at. We're looking forward to a busy summer of gigging, playing at Wild Roots festival in June should be good craic, and there's some more tunes around the corner, so keep an ear out for that. Cheers!
