New Neighbours cast member Mischa Barton has appeared on set as the new series of the long running Australian soap begins production in Melbourne.

Barton, who rose to fame in US teen drama The O.C., was pictured alongside cast members Jackie Woodburne and Alan Fletcher with the Ramsay Street sign.

The soap about the lives, loves, and challenges of the residents on Ramsay Street in Erinsborough, Australia, a fictional suburb of Melbourne has been reprieved by Amazon Prime after it was axed in 2022.

The revitalised series will premiere for free on Prime Video in Ireland, Amazon Freevee in the UK, and US this Autumn, with previous seasons of Neighbours are currently available to stream on Prime Video.

She will join the cast as a guest star, playing Reece, an "unpredictable" American new to Erinsborough who's not quite who she appears to be.

"I’m excited to be part of this iconic show’s next chapter," she said. "And I am really looking forward to being back in Australia a place I know and love! I think the character of Reece is going to be a great role for me to explore and play with."

Jason Herbison, Neighbours' executive producer, said: "With Neighbours launching on Amazon, we are beyond excited to have an actor of Mischa’s calibre join us for the beginning of this exciting new chapter.

"Mischa’s character is dynamic and unpredictable and will have an instant presence on Ramsay Street. Our loyal viewers are going to love her, locally and abroad."

London-born Barton has also appeared in the films Lawn Dogs, hit supernatural thriller The Sixth Sense and the critically acclaimed drama series Once and Again.

She has also worked on projects such as Papa, Ouija House and The Toybox and can next be seen starring in the murder mystery thriller Invitation to a Murder due out for release this spring.

The original series of Neighbours ran for more than three decades and launched the careers of many household names, such as Margot Robbie, Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce, and Russell Crowe.
