Pick of the Day

Eurovision Song Contest, 8.00pm, RTÉ One

Streaming on RTÉ Player

Here’s the big moment for Ireland’s entry, We Are One by Wild Youth.

It's the first semi-final from Liverpool Arena, which sees the 10 songs with the highest number of votes proceed to the final on Saturday night.

Can the lads do it and make the big one? Once or twice upon a time Ireland would be contemplating success here as winning the Eurovision – but nowadays even reaching the final is a good contest for us.

Despite the brief furore around the band last week, reports indicate that they’ve been laser-focused on tonight’s performance. All they can do is their best. Fingers crossed it’s enough to get them to Saturday’s decider.

As ever, the bould Marty Whelan will be on hand to capture the unique Eurovision atmosphere.

Don’t Miss

Champions League Live, 7.30pm, RTÉ2

It’s Real Madrid v Manchester City (KO 8pm) in the first of this week’s massive Champions League games.

Peter Collins presents all the action from the semi-final first-leg encounter at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid are the holders of a competition they’ve won 14 times so their experience is a huge factor.

As for Manchester City, they lack Real’s pedigree but comfortably overcame another European heavyweight in Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals and look to have the strongest team left in the tournament.

With analysis from Liam Brady and commentary by Darragh Maloney.

One-Armed Wonder: The Extraordinary Story of Jimmy Hasty, 10.25pm, RTE2

Another chance to see this fascinating documentary about the murdered Belfast striker Jimmy Hasty, who lost an arm as a teenager but still enjoyed a successful football career.

After spending most of his time with Dundalk in the League of Ireland., Hasty retired in the 1970s and returned to Belfast, where he was callously killed by loyalist thugs in a random shooting.

Inside the Factory, 8.00pm, BBC Two

Gregg Wallace (below) spends the day in the York factory where the famous Polo mints are made.

There he follows the process from grading the sugar, making the dough and drying the mixture to adding the flavour and pressing the sweets into their famous mini doughnut shape.

Cherry Healey then visits the largest sugar beet factory in Europe and historian Ruth Goodman explores the clever marketing that persuaded many people to purchase minty mouthwash.

Moonstruck, 11.15pm, BBC Two

Here's something for the insomniacs and night owls. It's an enjoyable romantic comedy from the 1980s, starring Cher in an Oscar-winning role, with Nicolas Cage, Olympia Dukakis and Danny Aiello.

An Italian-American widow agrees to marry an older man - only to fall head over heels in love with his younger brother, leaving her facing an impossible choice.

New or Returning Shows

The Greatest Auction, 8.00pm, Channel 4

AJ Odudu (below) hosts this brand-new show as millionaires, private collectors and antique dealers compete to buy extraordinary items.

Banksy experts take a risk on a piece of wall featuring work attributed to the anonymous artist and Tommy Cooper's iconic fez goes on sale.

Plus, a jar of pickled pig foetuses and an array of Mancunian punk band Buzzcocks’ memorabilia.

Mad Women, 10.00pm, Channel 4

The title is obviously inspired by the stylish Mad Men drama series that starred John Hamm. Oh, and it’s about TV ads from way back when.

From the Shake n' Vac to the Levi's launderette commercial (above), this documentary tells the story behind some of the most iconic UK adverts and the pioneering women who made them.

The Kidnap of Angel Lynn, 9.00pm, Channel 4

Using exclusive interviews, social media and immersive graphics, this documentary tells the story of the abusive relationship that led to the life-altering abduction of Angel Lynn.

At just 18-years-old, Angel met her boyfriend through a mutual friend and he rapidly became abusive towards her, isolating her and ultimately abducting her.

After being forced into a van, Angel fell from the back of the speeding vehicle and was left on the side of the road with near-fatal injuries that left her unable to walk, speak or feed herself.

Her horrific experience is retold as she learns to live again.

Turkey: Empire of Erdogan, 9.00pm, BBC Two

First in a two-part documentary about the life and career of the Turkish president.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan (above) was born at a time when Turkey was ruled by the secular elite. Joining an Islamist party, he became hugely popular as mayor of Istanbul.

But with the national constitution forbidding the mixing of religion and politics, Erdogan was sent to prison and banned from being an MP for life - only to stage an astonishing comeback.

Eric Sykes: One of the Great Troupers, 9.00pm, BBC Four

A versatile talent, Eric Sykes was a true British comedy legend, who passed away in 2012 after more than 50 years in the business.

Here, the veteran comedian takes to the stage of the Theatre Royal, Lincoln, where he gives a tongue-in-cheek account of his follies and fortunes as an actor, gag writer and comedian in theatre, radio and TV.

He also pays tribute to Hattie Jacques and Richard Watts, the co-stars of his long-running Sykes sitcom, and there are appearances from Eddie Lester, John Evans and Tony Hayes.

Preceding this documentary are two episodes of Sykes, the classic BBC sitcom he starred in alongside Hattie Jaques.

First up at 8pm is an episode shown in 1972, guest starring Peter Sellers. Eric and Hattie are visited by a stranger who has returned to honour a promise made in his childhood.

That’s followed at 8.30pm by an episode called Spy Ring, where Eric and Hattie become suspicious of their vodka-swilling, well-off new neighbours.
