Ed Sheeran wades in on the video for his new song Boat, the opening track from his forthcoming album, - (subtract).

The track was written by the English seaside in the winter of 2022 and according to a statement, it serves "as a metaphor for depression; a track that combats the struggles of feeling very low and not knowing how to break the cycle".

'-' (subtract) is described as "soul-baring" and follows Sheeran's revelation that his wife Cherry Seaborn was told by doctors she had a tumour while pregnant with their second child and the death of his friend, producer Jamal Edwards.

According to the singer, who recently played Dublin's 3Arena, the new album is the last in his decade-spanning mathematical album era and is said to be "an album that revisits Ed's singer/songwriter roots, and one that was written against a backdrop of personal grief and hope, '-’ (Subtract) presents one of the biggest stars on the planet at his most vulnerable and honest".

Boat follows the release of Ed’s 14th UK No.1 single Eyes Closed - a feat that saw the singer land the third most chart-toppers in UK history, behind Elvis and The Beatles.

Sheeran wrote and recorded the fourteen-track record with Aaron Dessner of The National in February last year.

New documentary Ed Sheeran: The Sum Of It All will air on Disney+ from 3 May.
