Behind the music - Everything By Electricity

Yulia Bizyukova
Yulia Bizyukova

Everything By Electricity have released new song, Goodbye. We asked singer-songwriter Yulia Bizyukova the BIG questions . . .

Yulia was born and raised in Barnaul, Siberia, where it snows for a third of the year and freezing cold winters can last up to five months. At age 10, she taught herself guitar and began writing songs that drew inspiration from the melancholy she witnessed.

Everything by Electricity credits Slowdive, Tangerine Dream, and Joni Mitchell, as some of their biggest influences. Prior to the pandemic, Everything By Electricity supported Helen Marnie of Ladytron on tour.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I grew up in Siberia but I'm one of those people who constantly moan about the cold weather in England. I'm allergic to cats and I have three cats. I'm a huge fan of David Hockney

How would you describe your music?

Atmospheric dream-pop music that evokes a melancholic sense of nostalgia for nothing in particular.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I was obsessed with Nirvana when I was 14, then discovered Britpop and later shoegaze which influenced the way I play guitar a lot. Sound-wise I get inspired by experimenting with synthesizers, tapes, delay pedals, drum machines.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

I don't remember any good gigs back where I was growing up in Siberia, but the very first gig I went to was a school gig where my band played in front of the entire school when we were around 12-13, it was overwhelmingly terrifying.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Nirvana, Nevermind. It's the first album I got when I was a kid and listened to it several times daily. It drove everyone around completely crazy for some reason which made me love it even more.

What's your favourite song right now?

Right now, it is The Downtown Lights by The Blue Nile, streamed it a ridiculous number of times over the past few weeks.

Favourite lyrics of all time?

Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It would probably be The Worst Taste In Music by a Swedish band called The Radio Dept. I had it on repeat when it was released years ago and it's still on repeat.

Where can people find your music/more information?

All the links to streaming my music and videos are on my website.
