Still Blue: "We are a quintessential Indie band with some pop, folk and rock elements."

Dublin and Donegal indie-pop band Still Blue have released their debut single, Honeysuckle Daydream. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

Vocalist Nicole Lyons, Ruairi Forde on guitar, and Greg Kearns on bass have just been added to the 2FM Rising list of Irish musical acts to watch.

Speaking about Honeysuckle Daydream, the band say, "Writing the song, we tried to encapsulate all the different emotions experienced in a night out - the complications of old relationships and the feeling that anything could happen."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

We are addicted to saying "slay". Our Lead singer looks like an emo CMAT. One of us has a Tattoo of a Bus Eireann route number

How would you describe your music?

We are a quintessential Indie band with some pop, folk and rock elements.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Nicole's lyrics are influenced by Phoebe Bridgers and Taylor Swift. Our pop and rock sounds are inspired from the likes of The 1975 and early Arctic Monkeys. We are always trying to make our listeners feel something, whether it’s sorrow and heartbreak from some of the more intimate tracks or pure joy from the feel-good, upbeat songs.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Greg - My first gig I ever went to was Two Door Cinema Club in the 3Arena. We got there so early that we were at the very front of the stage.

Ruairi - The first gig I went to was Busted. My mum took me, and my cousin and she bought us blow up guitars which we played the whole way through the set.

Nicole - I think my first concert was Olly Murs in the 3Arena with my mammy. I was a big X Factor girlie of course.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Greg - My first record I ever bought was a Trivium CD because my older brothers were big metal fans and I copied everything they did.

Ruairi - The first record I bought was Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown.

Nicole - I’m pretty sure it was Fearless by Taylor Swift and I’m still obsessed with The Way I Loved You.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Greg - Really loving Hozier’s latest bunch of releases, but mostly the song All Things End. He never misses.

Ruairi - Clay Pigeon Shooting’s I Win. I wish I won

Nicole - I have Peach Pit’s latest album on repeat and I’ve been listening to Rina Sawayama

lately, especially XS. It is so incredibly fun and infectious.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Nicole - It’s from a song called Bloom by The Paper Kites. It’s an incredibly sweet and simple line but it’s never left my mind since I first heard it in 2016. "When the evening pulls the sun down and the day is almost through, oh, the whole world it is sleeping but my world is you."

Ruairi - The Beatles - Something. I always loved the honest description from George Harrison in the lyrics of the song, without trying to define an emotion and just labelling it as something. "Something in the way she moves, Attracts me like no other lover, Something in the way she woos me, I don't want to leave her now, You know I believe and how."

Greg – "Under my umbrella ella ella ella ay ay ay." Just hits different.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Greg - Desoleil (Brilliant Corners) by Loyle Carner & Sampha.

Ruairi - Paulo Nutini - Iron Sky.

Nicole - Plastic Jesus by Tia Blake.
