Dublin solo artist Dollface (Aimee Rose) has released her new song, Plastic Skin. We asked her the BIG questions . . .
Plastic Skin is her first release of 2023 and follows Good Damage and Tired.
She has been singing and writing songs since she was a young teenager. What began as after-school violin lessons quickly grew into something that would become a lifelong passion.
"Finding other artists who I could relate to on such a deep and intimate level and wanting to recreate that amazing connection in my work and my writing ultimately became my goal," she says.
"The song writing process for me involves lots of pens and paper. Although I take notes on my phone whenever I think of lyrics, I don't think I’ve ever written a song that hasn’t been born from multiple crumpled pages, different colour pens and lots of scribbles"
Plastic Skin deals with themes of feminism and disassociation, trying to highlight how some people truly think of women and their bodies.
"Plastic Skin (originally called Dolls) was a song I wrote a few years ago for a college assignment, after an interaction I had with a then friend of mine. It made me reconsider what it means for a woman to feel at home in her own skin.
"It can often feel like the idea of being comfortable with who you are and what you look like isn’t really yours. It has been marketed to you all your life. Like dolls, the more we are scratched and broken and played with, the more our value seemingly decreases".
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I’m a Gemini, my favourite film is The Princess Bride and I’m the only person I’ve ever known who doesn’t like mint and chocolate as a combination.
How would you describe your music?
Alternative pop/rock, shoegaze, dream pop. Essentially, sad songs for the girls.
Who are your musical inspirations?
There are so many. Stella Donnelly, Soccer Mommy, Lucy Dacus to name a few.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
I can never decide whether it’s extremely embarrassing or extremely iconic that my first ever gig was Glee Live. Use that information to judge me how you see fit.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Avril Lavigne’s Let Go. I treasured that CD with my whole heart and learned off every word from the lyric sheets.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Pledge Drive by Cheekface.
Favourite lyric of all time?
So many lyrics come to mind. The answer would probably change depending on my mood. Having said that, the lyrics from Real Death by Mount Eerie are words that have stuck with me ever since I first heard them. The entire album, A Crow Looked at Me, is so devastatingly raw and real and beautiful. It’s the kind of album that changes you after listening to it.
"You were thinking ahead to a future you must have known deep down would not include you, though you clawed at the cliff you were sliding down, being swallowed into a silence that’s bottomless and real. It’s dumb, and I don’t want to learn anything from this. I love you."
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The End is Near by Phoebe Bridgers.
