Netflix has released the first pictures of LOVE/HATE and Peaky Blinders star Charlie Murphy as a young woman who becomes embroiled in a taboo love triangle in new erotic thriller Obsession.

Obsession is a contemporary adaptation of Josephine Hart's 1991 novella, Damage, which was adapted for the big screen in 1993 and starred Juliette Binoche and Jeremy Irons.

According to the synopsis for the new drama, "the story centres around a dangerous love triangle that emerges when the enigmatic Anna Barton embarks on a passionate affair with her fiancé’s father, William, a top surgeon.

"Whilst Anna fights to sustain both relationships, William is drawn into an obsessive spiral that is their undoing."

Speaking about her role as Anna, Enniscorthy-born actress Murphy says: "I actually remembered some stunning moments from the 1993 movie and it was great to have the book there during the early rehearsal period, but the writer Morgan Lloyd Malcolm had really done something very different with the source material.

"It was quite a revelation. While the original book and film, then, were told through the voice of a male protagonist, this version, written by a woman, co-directed by one and with a female intimacy coordinator on board, was to give at least equal weight to the female perspective."

She adds, "It was going to be so much more empowering to my character, Anna Barton. I read the script and thought, `Oh my God, 100 percent 'yes’ to this’. And I couldn’t have been more right. It was the most dynamic and fun role I could ever have imagined."

Billed as "passionate, elegant, and bold", the four-part drama also stars Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Stay Close, The Stranger), Indira Varma (This Way Up, Obi Wan Kenobi) and Rish Shah (Ms. Marvel, Strangers) and begins on the streaming service on 13 April.
