Behind the music - Lilac Haze

Lilac Haze

Bath-based dream pop artist Lilac Haze has released her debut double singles, The Ghost That I Once Knew/Lilac Haze. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I’m uncomfortable talking about myself. By the time I was seven, I had gold status in frequent flyer miles on Continental Airlines, as my family travelled a lot. Music and gymnastics were two big things in my life. When I was six, I had a major decision to make. My parents sat me down and asked if I wanted to continue in music or join the elite gymnastics program on track for the Olympics. It was a tough decision because I loved both. But I’m so glad I stayed with music and singing.

How would you describe your music?

Possibly dreamy and ethereal. I hope it makes you feel something and takes the listener on a journey.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I’ve got so many. I love The Cure and All About Eve, and I am inspired by the music of the 80s/90s. My biggest musical inspiration though is Julie Andrews. She was a big inspiration of mine growing up. I watched all of her films and listened to a lot of her music. She got me into singing. I think I watched The Sound of Music so many times that the tape stopped working.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Dolly Parton in Houston, Texas when I was eight years old. Got to go backstage and meet her, talked about her great shoes and tiny feet haha. She was absolutely wonderful.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Wish by The Cure when I was 13.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I’ve got a few favourites right now. Freight Train by a new band called Night Swimming, who are wonderful. Another favourite is Apart by The Cure, and Last January by The Twilight Sad.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"When at last our life on earth is through, I will share eternity with you." - Édith Piaf (Hymne à L’amour).

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Let it Be by The Beatles.

Where can people find your music/more information?
