Barry Keoghan is in negotiations to join his fellow Irish Oscar nominee Paul Mescal in director Ridley Scott's sequel to his 2000 box office hit Gladiator.

Winner of five Oscars, Gladiator told the story of former general Maximus Decimus Meridius' (Russell Crowe) quest for revenge in Ancient Rome.

US entertainment trade publication Deadline reports that The Banshees of Inisherin star Keoghan is expected to play Emperor Geta if a deal is done.

It has been reported that Aftersun star Mescal will play Lucius, who was played by Spencer Treat Clark in Gladiator.

Lucius was the son of Connie Nielsen's character Lucilla and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix's deranged emperor Commodus in the original Crowe-starring movie.

Mescal's new film, the psychological drama God's Creatures, opens in Irish cinemas on Friday 24 March.
