Over the past 40 years, Sebastian Barry has created an impressive body of work that has delved into the dark crevices of family life, Irish history and that troubled space where they overlap.

This profile of the multi-talented Dubliner looks at the influences on the life and work of the novelist, playwright and poet, including his actress mother, Joan O’Hara.

It also looks at his architect and poet father, and his wife and children.

The programme also reflects on the development of his writing career from first-time playwright to becoming the laureate for Irish fiction.

The gangster drama, starring Forest Whitaker, continues.

Jose Battle asks a favour from new partner Bumpy Johnson - a political assassination. Malcolm X is detained by Saudi authorities when he travels to Mecca.

Meanwhile the district attorney targets Mayme for her gangster ties.

Lady Bird, 9.30pm, TG4

Golden Globe-winning comic drama, written and directed by Greta Gerwig, starring Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf and Tracy Letts.

Ronan plays artistic California teenager Lady Bird – a young woman who expects much from life.

But the strained relationship with her mother and failing family finances keep clipping her wings, while early romance leads to heartache.

Scarlett's Driving School, 8.30pm, BBC One

This week’s episode looks at single mother Amy, who is desperate to learn to drive to improve the lives of her kids.

But after an unlucky 13 years learning how to handle a car and two failed tests under the instruction of her own mother, both feel they are going backwards.

During five days, they must try and stop Amy's panic attacks while driving.

New or Returning Shows

The Gold: The Inside Story, 9.00pm, BBC One

Following last night’s final episode of the drama based on the events, here’s the true story of Britain's biggest bullion heist.

It features the personal accounts of the police officers who investigated the 1983 robbery at the Brink's-Mat security depot.

Speaking for the first time since the robbery, Detective Chief Superintendent Brian Boyce and DC Tony Yeoman reveal the challenges they faced, the strategy they took and the tragedy that unfolded.

This is what happened as they staked out violent criminal Kenneth Noye, one of the men at the epicentre of the gang transforming the gold into cash.

Imagine: Stephen Frears - Director for Hire, 11.40pm, BBC One

Alan Yentob joins director Stephen Frears (above) on the Vienna set of forthcoming HBO drama series The Palace, and looks back his career while exploring the city.

Frears looks back on his breakthrough in the theatre, at the Royal Court in London in the early 1960s, through BBC's Play for Today to his movie breakthrough with My Beautiful Laundrette and Dangerous Liaisons.

With contributions from Hugh Grant, Judi Dench, Steve Coogan, Hanif Kureishi, Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Jack Black, Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep.

The Catch, 9.00pm, Virgin Media One

Psychological thriller set against the coastline of south-west England, based on the novel of the same name by TM Logan, and adapted by Michael Crompton.

The series stars Jason Watkins, Poppy Gilbert and Aneurin Barnard.

Ed Collier, a proud husband, father and local fisherman, finds his life spiralling out of control when a rich and handsome man enters his daughter Abbie's life and threatens to take him away from her.

24 Hours in Police Custody, 9.00pm, Channel 4

This is a two-part special following the case of a naked man found stabbed to death in Luton.

That discovery leads police to discover this may be one of a series of murders in which men are lured with the promise of sex, so that they can be robbed.

DI Dale Mepstead turns her attention to two men who are seen on CCTV accompanying the suspects into a flat.

Will either of the women being held in custody reveal their identity?

Britain's Lost Masterpieces, 9.00pm, BBC Four

Art experts Jacky Klein and Dr Bendor Grosvenor visit museums as they track down previously unknown paintings by some of the world's greatest artists.

In the first edition, the pair head to a museum store in Swansea, where they reveal a multi-million pound lost masterpiece with the potential to rewrite art history.

Plus, Jacky is prompted to re-examine the life of renowned Polish artist Josef Herman, who created a giant painting of local coal miners.

Gabby's Dollhouse: Season 7, Netflix

This American live-action/animated/interactive preschool series created by Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey returns for a seventh run.
