Ryan Tubridy has said that his decision to step down as the host of The Late Late Show after 13 years wasn’t an easy one to make but that "it feels really good".

Speaking on the Claire Byrne Show on Thursday morning on RTÉ Radio 1, he said, "I’ve enjoyed it so much. I’ve had a joyful time. What a job! Ever since I was a kid, I’ve dreamed of having a job like The Late Late Show.

"I’d be off sick from school, and I’d watch these daytime talk shows on British TV, and I’d think what a job, I’d love to do that. Then I’d watch Parkinson and Gay Byrne.

"I wasn’t academically very bright, but I was a good talker. I’m curious about people and I’m passionate about Ireland and when you have great people around you it makes it so much more enjoyable."

He added that he will continue to host his radio show on Radio 1. "I’m not leaving RTÉ, sorry about that. I do a radio show five mornings a week and I adore it. I adore the tv show too but I am not leaving RTÉ. I’m not ready to leave the radio by any means."
