Westlife at Wembley
Westlife at Wembley

Dublin Narcos tells the tale of drug-fueled crime in the capital, there's Westlife Live at Wembley Stadium, a Dionne Warwick night, and Saturday evening fun with Ant & Dec and Michal McIntyre . . .

Pick of the Day

Dublin Narcos, 9.00pm, Sky Documentaries

Streaming on NOW

Not exactly fun Saturday night viewing, but nonetheless this promises to be a fascinating series.

Over the 1980s and 1990s Dublin transformed from a recession-blighted backwater to one of the wealthiest cities in Europe.

As its fortunes changed so did those of its criminals, who profited from selling heroin, ecstasy and cocaine.

Dublin Narcos tells the story of the rise in addiction, violence and organised crime over these years and which persist to this day, with first hand testimony from the kingpins and cops to the ravers and users.

Viewers will also hear from the fearless journalists whose attempts at exposing the drugs barons led to the death of one of their bravest, Veronica Guerin.

Don’t Miss

Dionne Warwick Night

Dionne Warwick - Don't Make Me Over, 8.40pm, BBC Two

Here’s a profile of the singer (below) whose career has spanned more than four decades – and who is forever linked to the legendary songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

They combined for many years with hits such as Alfie, Walk On By and You’ll Never Get to Heaven if You Break My Heart.

Featuring contributions from friends, family and collaborators including Burt Bacharach, Tom Jones, Gloria Estefan, Quincy Jones and Michael Caine.

That’s followed by Dionne Warwick at the BBC at 10.15pm, a selection of performances on Beeb programme over the years by the singer.

It features songs such as Heartbreaker, Always Something There to Remind Me, Anyone Who Had a Heart, All the Love in the World, and That's What Friends Are For with Elton John.

Then at 11.40pm there’s Fern Britton Meets Dionne Warwick, a repeat from 2012 that looks back on what was then a 50-year career.

The singer reflects on her remarkable life in showbiz, which began with the release in 1962 of her first single Don't Make Me Over and has most recently seen her re-record some of her best-known hits.

Warwick also discusses the tragic death of her cousin Whitney Houston (above, with Dionne) earlier that year, fighting racism, and the importance of her Christian faith.

Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, 7.00pm, Virgin Media One

More fun and games with TV's most dynamic duo.

Rapper Big Zuu is the Star Guest Announcer and there's the world premiere of whodunit Murder at Bigwig Manor starring a whole host of ITV faces, including Joel Dommett, Davina McCall, Keith Lemon and Judi Love.

Plus, heaps of surprises for the audience and everyone at home.

Michael McIntyre's The Wheel, 6.50pm, BBC One

The comedian is back with his colossal spinning wheel, offering three contestants the chance to secure the final cash prize - but only one of them can play for the jackpot.

Helping them along the way are celebrity experts Motsi Mabuse, Jon Richardson, Tom Skinner, Carol Vorderman, Joe Marler, Rav Wilding and Joanne McNally.

The Tommy Tiernan Show, 9.45pm, RTÉ One

Streaming on RTÉ Player

Still going strong as he works his way through the entire population, Tommy Tiernan continues to have a freshness about this show.

Just as it is for the viewers and the studio audience, Tommy’s in the dark about who he will be interviewing until they walk out to greet him.

Obviously, anything can happen here - especially if Tommy doesn't have a clue who they are.

New or Returning Shows

Westlife Live at Wembley Stadium, 8.15pm, RTÉ One

The much-loved Irish boyband perform for the first time in their career to a sell-out crowd at Wembley Stadium in London.

Paris Police 1905, 9.00pm, BBC Four

Here’s a French period drama in the now traditional subtitled Saturday night slot.

Looks a bit like a Parisian Ripper Street.

The Paris vice squad begins to clean prostitutes off the city's streets, only to discover a man's body in the public park. Inspector Antoine Jouin heads up the investigation.

Followed at 9.55pm by episode two. Lepine asks Jouin to remain discreet in his report of a death to avoid a scandal. Marguerite Steinheil prepares for the opening of a new collection of her husband's work, to which she has invited Lepine. In French.

Saturday Cinema

Faded television actor Rick Dalton and his stunt double Cliff Booth strive to hang on to their careers during the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.

When a Man Loves a Woman, 10.45pm, TG4

Given that The Dry arrived on RTÉ during the week, here’s a timely screening of this very watchable drama, starring Andy Garcia, Meg Ryan, Lauren Tom, Ellen Burstyn, Tina Majorino and Mae Whitman.

A couple's outwardly idyllic marriage is close to disintegrating through the wife's alcoholism, prompting her husband to resort to desperate measures to make her give up drinking for their children's sake.

But he is also forced to face up to the part he played in allowing her life to go off the rails.

Max the terrier encounters canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a scary turkey when he visits the countryside.

Luckily for the lovable dog, he soon catches a break when he meets Rooster, a gruff farm dog who tries to cure the pooch of his neuroses.
