New or Returning Shows
Stephen Fry: Willem & Frieda – Defying the Nazis, 9.00pm, Channel 4
The actor and writer Stephen Fry visits Amsterdam to learn about a remarkable couple during the occupation of the Netherlands in the Second World War.
Painter Willem Arondeus and cellist Frieda Belinfante used their artistic skills to forge identity cards that saved thousands of Jews from the death camps.
The Nazis had exploited the fact that the Dutch had the most sophisticated identity card system in the world.
Each card they issued had a duplicate stored in the Amsterdam Central Records Office to prevent forgery. Willem led a daring raid to destroy the duplicate cards.
Fry also discovers why this story has remained largely hidden to this day.

After travelling south to Auckland harbour, New Zealand, two explosions sank the ship and killed a crew member.
