Behind the music - Kill 'Em Charlie

Kill 'Em Charlie
Kill 'Em Charlie

Cork indie rockers Kill 'Em Charlie have released Local High Roller, the first single from their upcoming EP, No Ties To The Morning. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

Taking their name from a Spider Man comic, the band consists of Eoghan McGuigan (vocals/guitar), Alex Sheehan (backing vocals, guitar), Patrick Kirwan (guitar), George Broadbank (backing vocals, guitar) and Damon Walsh (drums).

They released their debut EP I Hope This Works for You ('Cause it Does for Me) in October of 2020 and their inspirations include the likes of Kings of Leon, Fontaines DC, Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

We are five Tipp boys who have all ended up in Cork (for our sins. We have been gigging as our current line-up for around four years now and our second EP No Ties to The Morning is out February 17th!

How would you describe your music?

Whenever we are asked that question, we always find it quite tough to put our finger on it. As a 'get out of jail', we usually lay somewhere around indie rock. We were recently tagged as ‘Lad Rock’ which is growing on us. That label to us would point to the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, etc. with their type of catchy riff songs while also having a bit of edge to it.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I think a lot of us grew up listening to pop punk so Blink 182 etc would have had a big impact on us. However, Arctic Monkeys and David Bowie have also been major inspirations for us as we get older and write more music.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Alex - Westlife and surprisingly I am not ashamed of that.

Damon - U2.

Patrick - Avenged Sevenfold.

George - Busted.

Eoghan - Mumford and Sons (hasn't aged well).

What was the first record you ever bought?

Alex - American Idiot by Green Day was the first record I ever bought with my own money, and I could not be more thankful for that

Damon - Appetite For Destruction by Guns ‘N Roses.

Patrick - The Essential Michael Jackson.

George - Dookie by Green Day and been a Mike Dirnt fan boy ever since.

Eoghan - Favourite Worst Nightmare by Arctic Monkeys (has aged well)

What’s your favourite song right now?

Alex - Nigel the Gannet by The Burning Hell.

Damon - Salvation by The Cranberries.

Patrick - Revolver by Cartoonhead.

George - Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) by Deftones.

Eoghan - The Thirty-Foot Trailer - Luke Kelly.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Alex - May not be of all time but I love ‘If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts’ from Counting Crows. That always come to mind when I’m asked this question.

Damon - Also not necessarily my favourite but "What came first the chicken or the dickhead?" from the Arctic Monkeys.

Patrick - "And to tear apart the ties that bind, perhaps f*** off might be too kind" from Arctic Monkey’s Do Me a Favour.

George - First that come to mind are "Let your demeanour be your deep-down self, and don't sacrifice your life for your health" - Fontaines D.C.

Eoghan - "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl, year after year" - Pink Floyd. Fairly classic.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Alex - To go with my answer earlier, Jesus of Suburbia from American Idiot. Nine minutes of solid goodness.

Damon - A Day In The Life - The Beatles.

Patrick - I’ve Got a Feeling - The Beatles.

George - There's a Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths.

Eoghan - Let's Dance - David Bowie.
