Behind the music - Chalk

Chalk: Gothic techno punk

Irish post-punk/electronic merchants Chalk have released their new single, Static. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

The new track is a primer for their debut UK and Irish headline tour later this year and follows previous singles Them and Velodrome. The three-piece are based in Belfast and was formed in 2019 after meeting at film school.

Speaking about Static, Ross Cullen of Chalk says: "We wanted to explore the feeling of not knowing your place in the world. Living within order and regime, following instructions.

"`Stand up straight, a pre-owned smile/There's been a knock at my door, they’re gonna try and burn me down’ But then subverting from the social norms and gaining control. Creating a path for yourself, confronting the uncertainty and risks.

"`Searching for something to do, just to keep myself right’." Reaching the end of that path and waiting for fulfilment but you’re not sure when it will come or if it will at all."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

We all studied film together We watch films and write lyrics as we watch. We love chicken wings.
