Dublin-based alt-pop artist Valerie Rose has released her new single, Rip My Calendar. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

It's been a busy start to 2023 for the seventeen-year-old. In addition to releasing new music, Valerie performed at The Workman’s Club as part of Women’s Christmas in early January and has earned a place on the Hot Press 'Hot For 2023’ shortlist.

Speaking about Rip My Calendar, she says, "it’s a song about not wanting to put pressure on yourself anymore. It’s about doing what you want to do, instead of prioritising other needs over your emotions. Sometimes you need a break from it all."

Over the last year, multi-instrumentalist Valerie has been working closely with Diffusion Lab, the record label and management company based in The Playground, Dublin.

She adds, "I wanted to write something based on how I was feeling at the time. I was a bit overwhelmed by how busy my schedule was, coming back to school and exams coming soon. I wanted to express my frustration and for it to come across in the song."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I'm very hardworking. I put a lot of effort into song writing. I like to keep myself busy. I like to always have some sort of plans lined up, which is hard this year as I’m doing my Leaving Cert. I’ve been into music since I was small. I’ve been doing vocal training, and different types of dancing and I’ve been in many shows.

How would you describe your music?

An amalgamation of random thoughts and melodies in my brain. it’s kinda hard for me to fully describe it. it’s definitely a big mix of things. I’d say it’s alternative pop.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Definitely Lauryn Gaffney and Chris Bubenzer inspire me a lot, I really look up to them both. They’re both so incredibly talented and it really nice being able to work with them. I really like Conan Gray; I’ve been a fan of his for a long time. I usually listen to a lot of different songs by a lot of different artists, so I find it a bit hard to pinpoint specific artists that inspire me, but Conan is definitely a prominent inspiration.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first gig I ever went to was a Twenty One Pilots show when I was thirteen. I remember being super amazed by it.

What was the first record you ever bought?

The first record I ever bought was Taylor Swift’s 1989. I was very young around eight or nine when I got it and I remember that I was very picky with listening to music and only liked listening to songs I already knew. So unfortunately, only half of the album was ever played, but that half was played a lot.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Right now, my favourite song is Fall 4 U by Nieve Ella. It’s constantly stuck in my head.

Favourite lyric of all time?

The entire song of Vanilla Curls by Teddy Hyde. I can't pick one lyric, it’s all very clever, witty and funny and it has some really cool lines.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Oleander by Mother Mother, I never seem to get sick of it.
