Dublin pianist, composer, and arranger Daniel Luke has released Shadow Dance, the first single from his upcoming debut album of the same name. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

A founding member of Gypsies on the Autobahn, who released two albums and toured Ireland and the UK extensively for over a decade, multi-instrumentalist Daniel spent many years playing drums and keys in various Irish projects.

In 2017 he moved his focus to piano, achieving the highest diploma available for teaching with the Royal Irish Academy of Music. More recently his piano playing has featured on J Smith’s debut album, and on tracks with Stevie Appleby.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I play and teach the piano, I’m a little bit obsessed with bouldering, and I grew up in Cabra, Dublin.

How would you describe your music?

I make instrumental solo piano music, somewhere in between classical and contemporary, with a jazz influence. It’s interesting trying to create a feeling, landscape, or a journey without words, and that’s what I am trying to do. I would say it’s melody driven music, with a lot of playfulness to it.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I have an eclectic taste in music. My influences range from Radiohead to Debussy. Some more current inspirations are Chilly Gonzales and h hunt.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first gig I remember going to without adult supervision was The Darkness in the Point when I was about 15.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Wheatus’ self-titled album. I was 11 or 12 and I remember it had the parental guidance sticker on it, so it was pretty impressive.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I would say right now it is Wrong I by h hunt. His album Playing Piano for Dad is incredible.

Favourite lyric of all time?

'And I need you more than want you, And I want you for all time’ - Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

This will definitely change every time I’m asked it but today it’s the Nocturne in Db Major Op. 27 No. 2 by Chopin. I feel like it’s near perfect as a piece of piano music, a full spectrum of colour and emotion.

Where can people find your music/more information?
