The death has been announced of the American actress Annie Wersching, best known for her role as Renee Walker in the thriller series 24. She was 45 and had been diagnosed with cancer in 2020.

US entertainment trade publication the Hollywood Reporter says the mother of three passed away in Los Angeles on Sunday.

In a statement, Wersching's husband and fellow actor Stephen Full said: "There is a cavernous hole in the soul of this family today. But she left us the tools to fill it.

"She found wonder in the simplest moment. She didn't require music to dance. She taught us not to wait for adventure to find you. 'Go find it. It's everywhere.' And find it we shall."

"As I drove our boys, the true loves of her life, down the winding driveway and street, she would yell BYE! until we were out of earshot and into the world," Full continued. "I can still hear it ringing. Bye my Buddie. 'I love you little family...'"

Born in St Louis, Missouri, Wersching competed as an Irish dancer - she was introduced to the art form by an Irish babysitter - before going to college to study musical theatre in Illinois.

Her first screen role was in the series Star Trek: Enterprise in 2002. Along with her role in 24, her many television credits included the series General Hospital, The Vampire Diaries, Runaways, Bosch, Star Trek: Picard and The Rookie. She also voiced the character Tess in the video game The Last of Us.

Paying tribute, her 24 co-star Kiefer Sutherland wrote: "The world lost a light today. Annie Wersching was one of the greatest actors I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and my friend. My heart breaks for her young family. May she be remembered for the beautiful person that she was."
