Ahead of the release of their new album, The Total Space, Cork alt folk band Boa Morte have released their new single, Hard to Know. We asked them the BIG questions . . .
It follows their last album, 2019's Before There Was Air, and sees "Boa Morte edge deeper into the woods of ambient, drone and synthesised sound with little to guide them but their innate melodic compass and instinct for unorthodox song".
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
We live in Cork and have been part of the Cork music scene since 2002. We make quiet-ish, slow-ish alt-folk songs with vocal harmonies, guitars, bass, synths, samples and drums. We are about to release our fourth album on UK record label Gare Du Nord records.
How would you describe your music?
We tend to write unorthodox folk songs - and further mess with them by adding ambient noise, drone and synthesised sounds. You'll have to check out our new album to see what we mean.
Who are your musical inspirations?
We are all into different types of music ranging from Brian Eno to artists like Mount Eerie, Lambchop, Adrianne Lenker/Big Thief, Moor Mother... you name it.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Some of us went to see New Order in their heyday.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Probably something by The Smiths.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Abyss Kiss by Adrianne Lenker.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection" - David Berman.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Inside Looking Out by Mark Hollis.
