Simon Collins, who is the son of Phil Collins, and Kelly Nordstrom have formed new band eMolecule. They release their debut album The Architect on 10 February. We asked Simon, who moved to Ireland several years ago, the BIG questions . . .

The two long-time collaborators met in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 2005 and have been working together ever since.

They released their debut album Dimensionaut in 2012 and in the summer of 2020, formed eMolecule.

Meeting in person at Simon's studio in Ireland, the duo spent a solid month writing the concept and music start to finish. Over the following months, they completed writing, producing and performing The Architect both remotely and together in Ireland.

Speaking about the new band and album, Simon says, "During the creative process of making this record, I discovered an even deeper part of my creative self I never knew existed.

"This album is the sign of a creative force both Kelly and I have come to discover. For the first time throughout working together for 18 years, we are perfectly aligned.

"Working with Kelly on this project has produced some of the most meaningful music I've created, and I believe represents some of my life's best work to date."

Kelly adds, "Simon and I have been working together for almost 20 years. The personal connection between Simon and I is exemplified by the quality of songwriting on this album.

"The music on our first offering as a duo is the best I have ever been a part of. As a guitarist, the inspiration behind this album is unparalleled.

"As a songwriter, this is the best opportunity I have ever had to explore the meaning of life."

How would you describe your music?

I'd like to say we are a modern progressive rock/metal band with an atmosphere of electronics and ambience.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Everything from Pink Floyd, to Audioslave, and the electronic band, Leftfield. I used to DJ, so psychedelic inspiration all over the map to progressive rock.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

I remember sitting at the front of house at a Genesis gig when I was five years old. It was the start of a long and adventurous musical education.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I bought Never Mind the Bollocks by the Sex Pistols!

What’s your favourite song right now?

Ours. Beyond Belief by eMolecule .... LOL.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"You can’t hide nowhere with a torch light on", from the band Midnight Oil.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Supper's Ready by Genesis has supreme sentimental value to me growing up and it’s a good old 20-minute epic highlighting the best work of the 70s Genesis output!
