Paul Mescal is in negotiations to star in director Ridley Scott's sequel to his Oscar-winning Russell Crowe adventure Gladiator.

Gladiator told the story of former general Maximus Decimus Meridius' (Crowe) quest for revenge in ancient Rome.

It has previously been reported that the sequel will focus on the now-adult Lucius, who was played by Spencer Treat Clark in the original movie.

Lucius is the son of Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen in Gladiator, and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix's deranged emperor Commodus.

The sequel would be Mescal's biggest screen outing to date.

He can currently be seen in the Oscar-tipped Aftersun.
