Film, scripts, letters, objects, photographs, recordings, art - they all come together to paint a portrait of a comic genius. But one plagued by crippling mental illness, insecurity, and an enduring lifetime struggle to reinvent what comedy could be.

The archive takes us on a surreal and revelatory journey into Spike Milligan's brain. Key pieces of archive will be jumping off points to explore a part of his character or specific chapter in his life.

These range from an unpublished play called The Snow Goose, home movies of sunny afternoons in the paddling pool, through to memories of time with his children.

This is pretty much the definitive story of Spike Milligan in his own words.

Here’s another classy documentary miniseries from Ken Burns and the folks at PBS.

It examines how the American people and their leaders responded to the Holocaust, and how this catastrophe challenged their identity as a nation of immigrants and the very ideals of American democracy.

The opening episode - The Golden Door (Beginnings: 1938) - sets the scene. After decades of open borders, a xenophobic backlash prompted the United States to pass laws restricting immigration.

In Germany, Hitler found support for his antisemitic rhetoric and the Nazis began their persecution of Jewish people, causing many to flee to neighbouring countries or America.

The US President Roosevelt and other world leaders grew concerned at the growing refugee crisis but failed to coordinate a response.

Voice actors and narrators for the miniseries include Liam Neeson, Matthew Rhys, Paul Giamatti, Meryl Streep, Werner Herzog, Joe Morton and Hope Davis.

Each episode features a variety of medical topics that emerge from the health checks.

The Outlaws, 9.35pm, RTÉ2
