Tommy Tiernan's back for more chat, Rod Stewart takes over BBC Two and The Who do likewise on Sky Arts, and there's The Masked Singer, Early Doors, and family fun with Sing . . .

Pick of the Day

The Tommy Tiernan Show, 9.40pm, RTÉ One

Streaming on RTÉ Player

Tommy Tiernan is back with his unique chat-show that's full of surprises for him - as well as his viewers.

A master of improvisation, Tommy thrives on the adrenaline of no preparation. The result is conversations full of adventure and surprise, with people from all walks of life, some well-known personalities and others less well-known.

With Tommy’s inquisitive nature, every conversation has the potential for great honesty and insight, humour and sometimes freewheeling wildness.

Mike Murphy was a guest last time around

Speaking ahead of the seventh season, Tommy Tiernan said:"The show is in many ways so unpredictable that it's impossible to tell people what to expect. It's like going to a party and not knowing who's going to be there.

"The only thing that I know for sure is that both myself and the guest are up for a conversation but where that conversation might go is anybody's guess. There's a studio audience there this year so how that extra energy in the room affects the chat will be interesting to see

"I sincerely hope that whatever happens on the night will continue to be of interest and entertainment to the Irish public. Many thanks for watching so far."

Imagine - Rod Stewart: Can't Stop Me Now, 10.35pm, BBC Two

The veteran rocker invites Alan Yentob (below) to his Los Angeles home to conduct an interview, in which Stewart looks back on his lengthy career.

He discusses working with acts like the Steampacket and Jeff Beck in the 1960s and his time with the Faces, whose offstage antics became legendary - as did the frontman's affairs with a string of famous women.

His solo career propelled him to superstardom with songs such as Maggie May and Sailing, and while the 1980s proved to be less successful, his constant reinvention has given him a lasting career.

Rod Stewart at the BBC, 12.00am, BBC Two

A tribute to the singer's career with a selection of his performances and interviews at the BBC.

Songs include Sailing, You're in My Heart, I Don't Want to Talk About It and the oddly-titled Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?

Plus, Handbags and Gladrags from Rod's set at Glastonbury in 2002, his cover of Dorothy Fields' classic I'm in the Mood for Love and a song from his Radio 2 concert in May 2013.

Old Grey Whistle Test: Rod's Christmas Concert, 1.00am, BBC Two

A concert at London's Olympia recorded on Christmas Eve 1976, featuring performances of Maggie May, Sailing, Tonight's the Night and I Don't Want to Talk About It.

That's a whole lotta Rod!

The FA Cup Third Round used to be great for shocks as this is where the big boys come in.

Tonight’s coverage - hosted by Gary Lineker (below) - includes Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield and Tottenham Hotspur v Portsmouth at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Reds lifted the trophy last season after defeating Chelsea on penalties in the final and get their defence under way in an all-Premier League clash.

Meranwhile, Spurs were looking to avoid an upset when they take on a League One club that has won the cup on three occasions, most recently in 2010.

That’s followed at 6.40pm by The Who: Live at Hyde Park, a 2015 performance by the veteran rock band as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations, including performances of My Generation, Pinball Wizard, Baba O'Riley, Pictures of Lily, etc.

Maximum R&B - The Birth of The Who begins at 9pm, where Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey (above) look back at the start of the band, recalling how their obsession with the music of Chicago, Memphis and Mississippi shaped their songwriting.

At 10pm there’s The Who: Quadrophenia - Live in London, a concert at Wembley Arena in 2013, where Townshend and Daltrey complete their tour marking the 40th anniversary of the release of Quadrophenia.

They perform the landmark rock opera in its entirety, including The Real Me, The Punk and the Godfather, Doctor Jimmy, Bell Boy and 5:15.

The series was created by The Royle Family co-writers Cash and Mealey, and is set in the fictional Stockport pub where love, life, happiness and, famously, blocked urinals are the subjects under discussion.

There's trouble in store for landlord Ken when the police pay a visit, home help Winnie reveals she is dreading her holiday to Scarborough and punters are few and far between for a planned day trip.

Then at 11.25pm, episode two sees Liam plans a surprise for Melanie's forthcoming birthday, Nana reminisces about her first love and Charlie Taylor's funeral disappoints Old Tommy.

Meanwhile, Sheila Crabtree is shocked to find staff at the hospital have no knowledge of her husband.

Not Going Out, 9.50pm, BBC One

This is a repeat but well worth seeing – even if you saw it first time around. It’s also a nice tribute to the late Tommy Cannon, who played Lee’s hilariously feckless dad Frank.

It's been over a year since Frank's death and Wendy, rediscovering a long-lost love for painting, decides to create a very unique tribute to him in oils.

The usually curmudgeonly Geoffrey seems very keen on the commemorative artwork, but Lee and Lucy simply hate it. Once it's hanging on their wall, the pair contrive to `lose" the painting without Wendy or Geoffrey noticing.
