Game of Thrones, Line of Duty and Schitt's Creek stars team up in The Rig - if you love Das Boot and The Thing, you'll be on board

Game of Thrones' Iain Glen, Line of Duty's Martin Compston and Schitt's Creek's Emily Hampshire have told RTÉ Entertainment that their new Prime Video series The Rig takes viewers into a "wonderful, unknown world" that mixes suspense and scares with science.

Set in the North Sea, The Rig tells the story of the crew on board the Kinloch Bravo as the drilling operation falls prey to a mysterious fog.

Created by newcomer David Macpherson - the son of an oil rig veteran - the series is directed by John Strickland (Line of Duty, Bodyguard) and Alex Holmes (The Letter for the King, Paula).

"It's a fantastic place for drama," said Compston of The Rig's setting.

"The claustrophobia, the power shifts, the dynamics as their world falls apart are fascinating."

"During the course of the story, they become more and more isolated and they sort of turn [on] each other," teased Glen.

"Fantastic writing - that's what drew me to it. Throughout it is this undercurrent - 'We should be having a wee think about what we're doing to the planet'. The planet is trying to tell us things and it has been for some time, and it feels like we're not listening quite acutely enough."

"I'm not a huge fan of supernatural stuff or Middle Earth or stuff that's, like, fantasy!" laughed Hampshire as Game of Thrones favourite Glen watched on bemused.

"But what I loved about this is that the science in it is real. That future is this close to being true. It could happen. You guys don't know what happens but believe me, you don't want it to!"

The Rig is streaming now on Prime Video.
