Ruth Negga is to star opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Presumed Innocent, an Apple TV+ series based on Scott Turow's best-selling thriller of the same name.

US entertainment trade publication Deadline says Gyllenhaal is in final negotiations to take on the role of murder accused Rusty Sabich - played by Harrison Ford in the 1990 big-screen adaptation of Presumed Innocent - with Negga playing his wife, Barbara.

Attorney Sabich is accused of murdering his mistress, with Deadline saying the limited series will explore "obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together".

Negga's role was played by Bonnie Bedelia in the film Presumed Innocent.

David E Kelley, the creator of Ally McBeal and The Practice, will work as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the new series, with Gyllenhaal also among the executive producers.

Ethiopian-Irish star Negga will next be seen in Netflix's Good Grief, the feature directorial debut of Schitt's Creek star Dan Levy.
