Fans of Netflix's 1899 have launched a petition calling for its renewal after its shock cancellation on the streaming service.

The much-loved series, which stars Emily Beecham and Aneurin Barnard, has been axed on the popular platform after just one season.

The series has a cult following spurred by the passengers, full of hope for a better future, aboard a ship to the New World sail into a nightmare when they find a second vessel adrift on the open sea.

The producers of the series released a social media post stating that the programme was not being commissioned for a second series.

Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar are the co-creators and said of the future of the multi-lingual series:

"With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed.

"We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season as we did with Dark.

"But sometimes things don't turn out the way you planned. That's life.

"We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hears that you were a part of this wonderful adventure.

"We love you. Never forget." Bo & Jantje."

Thousands of die-hard fans have launched a Change.org campaign to get the science fiction mystery back on television screens for more outings.
