Silent Witness

Emilia Fox is back with a new run of Silent Witness, there's a Gogglebox Festive Special, and David Attenborough’s back with a Frozen Planet II: Worlds of Wonder special . . .

Silent Witness, 9.00pm, BBC One

Season 26 of this crime drama about forensic pathologists opens with an episode entitled The Penitent - Part One.

A man is thrown from a high-rise building, an incident that may be connected to a notorious organised crime syndicate.

Aided by the National Crime Agency, Nikki (Emilia Fox) and her team set about uncovering the truth.

As they descend deeper into the murky depths of the investigation, Nikki soon finds herself caught in the organisation's web, with deadly consequences.

Part two is broadcast tomorrow night at 9pm on BBC One.

Gogglebox Festive Special, 9.00pm, Channel 4

Here’s a show that’s always good for a laugh.

The much-loved armchair critics cast their eyes over the biggest Christmas TV shows of 2022.

What about Giles and Mary?

Featuring the likes of Lee and Jenny, Marcus and Mica, the Malones, the Siddiquis and Simon and Jane, watching and talking about hits from the festive season.

They include classic movies, exciting new dramas and some of telly's biggest traditional treats.

Frozen Planet II: Worlds of Wonder, 8.00pm, BBC One

Highlights from the visually stunning series, in a journey from the Arctic to the Antarctic.

Narrated, of course, by the great David Attenborough.

Polar bears meet on the frozen Arctic Ocean, while pack ice in Greenland provides a nursery for baby harp seals. A pack of wolves hunts for bison, a pallas cat struggles to hunt in heavy snow, and golden eagles take on prey much larger than themselves.

Weddell seals haul themselves onto the Antarctic ice, while a pod of killer whales develops a strategy for hunting them.

The Greatest Showman, 7.00pm, Channel 4

Put reality on hold for another couple of hours and get lost in this wonderful musical starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya.

After losing his job as a shipping clerk, PT Barnum creates and develops his circus in New York in the mid-1800s with the help of playwright Phillip Carlyle and an adopted family of entertainers shunned by society.

This is a truly uplifting experience and just the tonic if you want to start the week/month/year with a smile on your face.

Foscadh, 9.30pm, TG4

Written and directed by Seán Breathnach, this is a delayed coming-of-age tale that will have you rooting for its hapless hero as he takes his first tentative steps into adulthood.

It tells the story of naïve recluse John Cunliffe who is suddenly propelled into manhood at the ripe old age of 28.

When his over-protective parents pass away, friendless John inherits mountain land that sits in the way of a lucrative wind-farm development where he is forced to navigate the choppy waters of trust, vengeance, and romance for the first time.

Starring Dónall Ó Héalaí, Fionnuala Flaherty and Cillian Ó Gairbhí.
