The death has occurred of the actor Laurie Morton at the age of 98. She died on Wednesday December 28 at Dublin's Royal Hospital in Donnybrook.
She played the role of Peggy in Tolka Row, RTÉ’s first-ever soap opera, which ran in the early 1960s and was married to the late actor David Kelly, who predeceased her in 2013.
Tolka Row was set in a fictional Dublin suburb and was based on Maura Laverty's play of the same name. It was first broadcast on 3 January 1964 and aired for five seasons until it ended in May 1968.
The series also starred Jim Bartley, who went on to play Bella Doyle in RTÉ's current soap opera, Fair City.
Morton received many accolades for her role as the mother in the award-winning 1971 urban drama A Day in the Life of Martin Cluxton.
Her film work included Hear My Song and Adam and Paul and she also appeared in RTÉ drama series such as Strumpet City and The Clinic.
She also featured in UK TV shows such as Ballykissangel and Tales From the Lazy Acre.
