Festive Five TV and streaming tips for Friday

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Today's top telly tips include Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Christmas special episodes of Anna Maxwell Martin in Motherland and Greg Davies in The Cleaner. . .

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Netflix

Now here’s what our family will be watching on Christmas night.

In the follow up to Rian Johnson's excellent Knives Out, Daniel Craig returns as Detective Benoit Blanc, who this time travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving an odd cast of suspects.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Blanc is hired by Helen Brand to investigate the death of her sister, Cassandra/Andi.

The ensemble cast includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

Motherland, 9.30pm, BBC One

A four-handed creation from the likes of our own Sharon Horgan and Graham Linehan, this sour look at motherhood in middle-class London has been a hoot.

The cast's great too, with the likes of Anna Maxwell Martin, Lucy Punch and Diane Morgan all excellent.

Mind you, last year’s third season felt like the story was done. Hopefully this Christmas special hits a few high spots.

Julia has a full house on Christmas Day with an influx of grandparents, not to mention Kevin and Liz.

Across the road Meg questions whether her husband really knows her at all and gets stuck into the booze - but soon regrets it.

Amanda grits her teeth as she spends the day with ex-husband Johnny and his new wife Tamara, while Anne is beside herself with excitement as she welcomes her mammy and cousins - all 32 of them.

Johnny Cash: The Man, His World, His Music, 9.00pm, BBC Four

Here’s a treat for the legion of Johnny Cash fans out there.

Robert Elfstrom's 1969 musical documentary charts the career of The Man in Black, and capturing Cash at the peak of his remarkable career.

The country singer is seen performing with his then new bride June Carter Cash, as well as in a rare duet with Coronation Street fan Bob Dylan.

The film-maker also presents a behind-the-scenes look at the influential American musician as he interacts with friends, family, and aspiring young musicians.

Followed at 10pm by Dolly Parton: 50 Years at the Opry, offering highlights from the singer's performance to celebrate 50 years as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, recorded in Nashville in October 2019.

A Ghost Story for Christmas: Count Magnus, 10.00pm, BBC Two

This should be good. It's nice to get a bit spooked at this time of year.

It’s Mark Gatiss's adaptation of MR James's supernatural tale, starring Jason Watkins, MyAnna Buring, Krister Henriksson and Allan Corduner.

The year is 1863 and the inquisitive Mr Wraxhall becomes fascinated by the long-dead founder of a Swedish family, who once made a strange journey to the Holy Land - on most unholy business.

As he is drawn ever deeper into Count Magnus's dark world he discovers that the dreaded aristocrat may not lie easy in his tomb.

The Cleaner, 9.00pm, BBC One

Taskmaster host Greg Davies returns as Paul 'Wicky’ Wickstead in this daft black comedy.

Christmas Day finds Wicky looking forward to winning Weasel's Christmas raffle as the first prize is an actual horse.

All that stands in his way is a blood-soaked crime scene in an ice-cream parlour, and a persistent customer who isn't going to let a little thing like a murder stop him from getting the perfect peach melba ice-cream.
