Today's top telly tips include Tom Cruise starring in Hollywood blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, The Great British Sewing Bee: Celebrity Christmas Special and the concluding episode of Sean O'Rourke's Two Tribes . . .

Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount+

Here’s one of the biggest movies of the year.

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise ) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.

When he finds himself training a detachment of top gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick's late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt Nick Bradshaw.

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Two Tribes, 9.30pm, RTÉ One

Streaming on RTÉ Player

In the second and final part of this documentary, Seán O'Rourke looks at the origins of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, their ascendancy, their core differences and what the future holds for these former bitter rivals in Ireland's 21st-century political terrain.

Inside Number 9, 9.00pm, BBC Two

The eighth season of these spooky stories opens with a tale entitled The Bones of St Nicholas.

Dr Jasper Parkway has booked an overnight stay in a reputedly haunted church on Christmas Eve. However, he is joined by unwanted guests.

It’s written by and stars Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton, with Shobna Gulati and Simon Callow.

The Great British Sewing Bee: Celebrity Christmas Special, 8.00pm, BBC One

Strictly Come Dancing's Johannes Radebe (below), EastEnders actress Natalie Cassidy, podcaster Rosie Ramsey and presenter Penny Lancaster take part in a trio of sewing challenges for Christmas.

They must put their twist on a festive apron, turn children's hand-me-downs into a novelty outfit for a baby and create a fancy dress outfit inspired by a pop star.

Sara Pascoe follows their progress, while judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant keep a close eye on every stitch and hem.

The Traitors, 9.00pm, BBC One

Claudia Winkleman hosts the finale of this compulsive reality show.

Having survived numerous murders and banishments, backstabbing and treachery, the players contest the biggest mission yet, as they are afforded a last chance to add more money to the overall jaw-dropping prize pot.

It remains to be seen whether the Faithful will be able to uncover who the Traitors are and share the money, or whether a Traitor will remain undetected and take the life-changing prize for themselves.
