France's 4-2 triumph over Croatia last time out four years ago in Russia ensured they emulated their victory on home soil in 1998.

They came into this year’s tournament as one of the favourites despite injuries to key players, including Paul Pogba, who starred in the last final, and Ballon d'Or-winner Karim Benzema, who also missed out four years ago.

France topped their group before eliminating Poland, England and Morocco in the knockout rounds.

Argentina are also chasing a third World Cup triumph, having previously been crowned world champions in 1978 and 1986.

They got off to an inauspicious start this time around with a shock 2-1 defeat against Saudi Arabia. Inspired by Lionel Messi, they recovered to top their group and go on to defeat Australia, the Netherlands and Croatia.
