Behind the music - Life In Mono

Life In Mono
Life In Mono

Life In Mono have released their double A-side single, Blackout/Sex To White Noise. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

Always intended to come as a pair, both songs were recorded back-to-back in one live take and speaking about the inspiration behind the singles, vocalist Sarah Clayton says, "Blackout is about people in your life that you know are no good for you but are hard to give up, whereas Sex To White Noise is about trying to find a connection that makes you feel something when you're feeling really numb."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

As a band, we can collectively fix your car, your heating and your back…. and we’ll still probably be skint.

How would you describe your music?

Honest, gritty, and cheaper than therapy. We always said the point of this band was to be genuinely authentic with what we do and say, so we just make music that we love.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Honestly, it’s a big range of stuff. Meshuggah, Bach, Hendrix, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, All Them Witches, AC/DC and Deftones, plus a little PJ Harvey and some early Placebo.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Sarah: Placebo at Wembley 2004.

Adam: Red Hot Chili Peppers supported by James Brown at Hyde Park, 2004.

James: My Chemical Romance somewhere in Cardiff, 2006.

Mike: Green Day at Manchester Arena.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Sarah: Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (from Virgin Megastore)

Adam: 5ive - Invincible (on cassette tape from Woolworths).

James: Shaggy - Hot Shot. Full of bangers.

Mike: Good Charlotte - The Young And The Hopeless.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Sarah: Fontaines D.C - Nabokov.

Adam: Monolord - Empress Rising. Sometimes all you need is one riff, nine minutes and about 15 fuzz pedals.

James: Fontaines D.C. - In ár gCroíthe go deo. Big fan of these guys and this song inspired a section of a song we recently recorded.

Mike: Boy - ten56.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"All your crying don’t do no good/Come down off the cross we can use the wood." - Tom Waits

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd. The intro alone was a very early musical lesson in tension and release. The lyrics are beautiful, the chords are perfectly placed… plus it's fairly long, so it’d take longer to get bored of it!

Where can people find your music/more information?

Instagram, Spotify, Facebook.
