Jennifer Aniston has announced the passing of her father and fellow actor John Aniston at the age of 89.

Paying tribute on Instagram, the Friends star posted a photo of herself as a baby alongside her father and wrote: "Sweet papa…⁣ John Anthony Aniston. You were one of the most beautiful humans I ever knew.

"I am so grateful that you went soaring into the heavens in peace - and without pain. And on 11/11 no less!

"You always had perfect timing. That number will forever hold an even greater meaning for me now I'll love you till the end of time.

"Don't forget to visit."

Born Yannis Anastassakis in Chania, Greece in July 1933, John Aniston moved with his family to the US at the age of two, with his father anglicising the family's surname to Aniston.

His screen career began in the 1960s and included TV shows such as Kojak, the soap opera Search for Tomorrow, Star Trek: Voyager, and The West Wing.

He was best known for his role as Victor Kiriakis in the US soap opera Days of Our Lives - playing the character from 1985 to the present day.

Earlier this year, John Aniston was honoured with a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Paying tribute, Days of Our Lives said: "Our hearts are broken over the loss of our beloved family member John Aniston. We love you John. Your legend will live on."
