Jason Byrne tells tonight's Angela Scanlon's Ask Me Anything that Britain's King Charles III had the last word when he met him backstage at the Royal Variety Performance in London in 2013.

Having "died on my a***" during his Royal Variety debut in 2006, Byrne "stormed it" with his Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball spoof on his return in 2013 - and the laughs continued backstage.

Flanked by singers Jessie J and Mary J Blige, Byrne waited to be introduced to the then Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

"And Mary J Blige is very excited about seeing Charles and Camilla," Byrne recounts.

"I said to her, 'You know he doesn't know who you are?' And Mary J Blige goes, 'Oh my God, he does! He knows who I am! I just sang for him!' I went, 'He hasn't a bog who any of us are!'"

"What they say is, 'When Charles and Camilla come up, just say thank you and move on'," Byrne explains.

"But I'm Irish - can't do that!"

Having been introduced via "the man behind Charles who tells him who he's talking to", Byrne was primed for his big moment.

"He said, 'Well done... Jason' - your man tells him! He goes, 'Well done, very, very funny'.

"He goes to move on, and I said, 'Did you really like it?'

"Now, the security guards - you can't see it on the telly - start moving in a bit closer to me because you're not supposed to keep talking to him! And they're going, 'What's the Paddy in a vest [doing]?!' I didn't even put on a shirt! I look mental!

"Charles then went, 'I'm sorry, what? I beg your pardon?'

"And I said, 'Did you like it?', and he goes, 'Oh yes! Yes! It was very funny! Yes! Yes!'

"And it looks as if he's going, 'Thank God someone's talking to me!'

"And so, I talk to him about the wrecking ball and what the set was, and he thought it was brilliant.

"Camilla didn't see him because there's cameras in their faces. She was going along about three people away. She bangs into him... and she goes, 'Oh hello!' - to Charles! And he goes, 'Meet Jason!'"

"They're lovely, they're so nice the two of them," says Byrne. "And then Camilla goes, 'Oh yes, it's the chap with no clothes on the ball!'"

"And then, this is the best thing," Byrne concludes.

"Charles looks at me - this actually happened - and he goes, 'I've got to move on, Jason. Lots of hands to shake'. But he looked at me as if to go, 'Couldn't be a*****!'

"And then I had to - because I'm Irish - I went, 'Do you fancy a drink later on?'

"And he looks at me and goes, 'I won't - but she will!'"

"Good old Camilla!" laughs Byrne.
